I can’t believe it’s been one year since my Expedition fire. Some days it feels like it was 10 years ago, while others it feels like just weeks ago. Every time I go to JoAnn’s I check the parking lots for the remnants of the fire. They were still there just two weeks ago! There isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t think about how truly lucky I was that day. That fire could have occurred while driving around with Brody earlier that day or even worse while I was at home sleeping like I had planned to do. I am so lucky that I listened to that little voice in my head that told me to stop at that store instead of heading straight home. Luckily no one was injured. Unfortunately, I can’t say that my 2002 Ford Expedition was the only casualty. The fire did destroy a Honda Accord that had been parked right in front of me. Cars and all the stuff we have in them are just things that can be replaced. That was something that was repeated to me over and over while I watched in horror as my truck was engulfed in flames and we were waiting on the fire department to arrive. Surprisingly the couple that owned the Honda Accord that was totaled out thanks to my Expedition fire said it the most. That phrase was also repeated during the following week while dealing with all of the people from the insurance company, while car shopping and just while talking with friends and family about what had happened. It took me a while to realize that the Expedition fire wasn’t nearly as bad as it could have been.
I now look back at the Expedition fire as a blessing in disguise. After all I did upgrade to a newer and nicer vehicle! It took a good 8 months but I have finally gotten over my paranoia of parking anywhere near an expedition, especially ones that were the same body style as mine was. I do still have one newscast from that day saved to the DVR. Lucky for me that was the best one! Why? Because my husband was on camera digging in his crotch. I will never understand how on earth they missed editing out that part of the video for that newscast! That was just the laugh I needed that day so I won’t complain!
