20 Mule Team Borax {Giveaway}

Over the years I’ve seen 20 Mule Team Borax down the laundry aisle as I walked by. The first time I remember asking my mom what it was she told me it was a cleaner or laundry additive. When I asked her why she wasn’t buying it for her laundry, she informed me that she felt it was more of a cleaner so she didn’t want to put in with our clothing. Her answer made sense so I didn’t push. It wasn’t until a few years later that I actually remember seeing her use it as a cleaner. Our sump pump had quit working during a storm and we ended up with 2 inches of water in most of the basement. After moving sucking all of the water up, moving the furniture and random items we pulled the carpet up to check for mold since it had taken a few days to realize the basement was flooded. After turning on fans and making sure all of the water was gone she ran to the store for a box of 20 Mule Team Borax. When I asked why she bought and sprinkled the powder all over, she explained that it would do two things. She said the first thing it will do is help remove odors and then secondly it will help clean the carpet. Since she sprinkled it on the carpet rather than added into the carpet cleaner, it took a long time to get it all up. After everything was dry, we moved all of the furniture back and I couldn’t resist sniffing the carpet. To my surprise 20 Mule Team Borax really did remove the odor that was in the carpet.

What my mom never told me was that 20 Mule Team Borax naturally softens hard water. I know my home is one of the 85% of homes that has hard water. While I knew that the hard water was fading my clothes, I didn’t realize it was preventing our laundry detergent from cleaning at max efficiency. She also didn’t tell me that 20 Mule Team Borax is 100% natural. It is a mineral from the earth, that once removed from teh ground is washed, dried and boxed for consumers.

There are many uses for 20 Mule Team Borax all around the house. Add 1/2 cup to ever load of laundry to help boost your detergents cleaning power by softening the hard water. Try sprinkling 1/4 cup on the bottom of your dishwasher to help reduce spots and film. You can deodorize mattresses by spraying with a mixture of 1/2 cup Borax and enough water to fill a 12 oz bottle. Hubby told me that when he was in school during auto class they would use 20 Mule Team Borax to wash the grease and grime off their hands. I wouldn’t have ever thought of this use!
